Help required - 1750 point Imperial Guard

yes this picture is only here because its so damn funny.  it has nothing to do with the post whatsoever.

Hi everyone,

Today I've been having a bit of a break from modelling and have been thinking long and hard about what list to take to the X-Legion 1750 singles in February.  Clearly i am taking my Imperial Guard, but having little experience with this points limit i am a bit stuck. The crux of the issue is that everything i produce seems to come to either 1700 points or 1800 points, 1750 is really annoying!!

Currently i have two main options.  They have quite a few similarities but each one will play quite differently i think.

List 1

company command squad - 4 meltaguns, chimera

psyker battle squad - 6 psykers, chimera

Marbo (yes really)

Just a few points, the autocannons in the melta vets do not conform to perceived Internet wisdom.  however, their purpose is twofold.  firstly, i am fed up with meltavets sitting around for 2 or 3 turns doing nothing while waiting to counter attack and the autocannon gives them another option for only 10 points.  secondly, if performing a true alpha strike from the vendettas (as in, one with a charge as well) then the extra 2" afforded by the larger heavy weapon base can be a big deal.

I know lots of people like to take plasma on their command squads.  I think this is madness.  The CCS is basically your primary throwaway unit.  They run in, twin-link their meltas, blow something up and then die.  they are reliable, not scoring, and basically irrelevant once they have performed their role.  The plasmas should be sitting on your objectives, being scoring units, and killing anything that drops into range.

Like Stelek, i really love stormtroopers in chimeras.  the versatility they give a list is truly exceptional.  however, i really want a psyker battle squad in this list.  i have a feeling there will be quite a few deathstar units and the PBS is an ideal way to get rid of most of them with minimal hastle.  now the big question. do people think it would be acceptable to take only a single unit of stormtroopers and a single PBS? my brain screams at me if i even think about this.  'What about the redundancy!', it shrieks, but is this really a big deal with these units in this army.  I have so much firepower and so many threat vectors already that these two units really are only the icing on the cake.

Finally, are either of these lists worth it, or should i just go back to the drawing board?

Later this week, the first part in my guide to creating 'Avatar dropship vendettas'

  1. What are the points values of these? 1750? or is there some wiggle room in the points?

And 'Avatar Dropship' - shit dude, I thought you hated that comparison!!! lol...

I have a few thoughts about both, but I'll reserve till I have time to write them up properly...

  2. The first is 1745, the second is 1750. As for Avatar, there is a reason its in inverted commas ;)
The fact is, the damn thing does remind people of that movie, and no-one remembers the original Command & Conquer, which its actually based on...

  3. I remember those Andy.

Also when I first saw this post I half expected to see Mogul and some of his horse buddies lol, instead we got Marbo!

I cant add to much to it, I've had Marbo against me a few times, and he was a pain in the backside, but he costs, what, 15 short of a Hydra? I'd be half tempted to add a 5th lol (overkill?) - but I see a reason for him, he's sort of like a wolfscout squad to deal with rear objective holders and what not.

As for the auto's in chimmies, I personally love that combo, its like you say, for a meager set of points your getting some extra punch for a couple of turns.

I am assuming that the infantry platoons are stealing the vets rides and they go in valks?

I personally like the PBS list though, I am a fan of PBS, as much because I think they are cool (what better reason is there ...)

Incidently, I just popped to the store to get some white lions for my conversions for my wolf army (lion army ..) and hardly anyone showed for that WHFB siege BS they are running, so they could have given us a table. What utter balls really. But still Sat afternoon?

I am debating between my 2 lists; (lads care to weigh in?)

    Libby (combi melta) x1

x5 RAS w/ MG (x3 AC, x2 LasPlas, x2 mb in there somewhere)
    x3 baals w/ HB
    x2 preds w/ autolas
    x1 pred w/ autohb

or drop the HB's off the baals and run another libby, dropping the MB's (or other filler).

Both has x5 AV11 x6 AV13 - but its a choice between more shots per turn or getting a second 5++ shield really. Cant decide :/

  4. Take both! Drop 1 Hydra for a 6 man unit of psykers :)

  5. But Hydras are just so awesome lol.

I was drooling over the guard today I have to say. I've decided that if GK's are donkey d**k (i.e not fun at all and dont look all that great) I'll do Guard. I am sure I'll be GW's biggest fan for a day as I buy 500 quids worth of tanks.

  6. Bandwagons favourite new boy <3 Hydras are good yes, but a list without a psyker battle squad is no list at all (imo) xD!

  7. Really depends on how you want to control the table.
I run an all Scout/Outflank setup:
    CCS (sometimes Creed)
    3 Stormtroopers Chimeras
    Harker's squad
    3 Vets in Vendettas
    Hydra Batteries

I love the PBS...but I don't think it has the synergy like the second list.

  8. all good points guys, thanks.

my trouble is, i am limited to only one or two practice games a week. in the end, i'm just goingto have to take the plunge and pick one :P

  9. Well if its quite tomorrow and I can get down in reasonable time (work permitting, I am at home, but just depends on the calls), we might be able to run a couple of games.

If thats the case I can run my normal and my LR/Term list or even my SW list if I can get my finger out and finish off these devs.

  10. Well after those 2 games I don't think we are any closer to the answer lol.

    Good games though Andy mate.

I'll book a 7:30 table Thurs, I'll either rock the Deathwing list (lol) or go with one of the first two lists again (with maybe some slight modification).

  11. Yeah they sure were interesting games. That second one taught me a thing or two about not giving up, that's for sure.

I'd like to play the deathwing, certainly. Very tough matchup for me but that's what I want :)

Cheers again, good to get back in the swing of things.

  12. No probs matey, was certainly interesting, especially when I pulled my head out of my arse on the 2nd and stopped being so timid in deployment.

Working on a Deathwing list right now (after an evening of Ultramarine + Kinnect Sport with mates lol). Potentially need to by 3 more land speeders, because 75 points for x3 S8 at 24" or x2 S8 at 48" is disgusting!

  13. Trying to work out a 1750 DW list potentially for Thursday. If I do get a half day off work on Thurs I can prob make one as I'll be able to get and make the chasis's of the speeders I need. If it gets denied I'll have to rock the BA mech list (but I may losely assemble my drop pod and give a similar list to ven's drop pod, without Meph though prob lol).

I am having trouble w/ the 1750 list I have to say.

    It would probably be;

    Belial

    x5 Death Wing Squads - CML, x5 TH/SS
    x1 Squad w/ Banner/FNP Battery

    x2 Speeder - x1 Typhoon/MM - x1 MM/HF
    x2 Speeder - x1 Typhoon/MM - x1 MM/HF
    x1 Speeder - x1 Typhoon/MM

Tricky really, I could drop both HF and add x1 assault cannon instead (as I do have 15 points left over on the above list) alternativily I could drop the banner and add another speeder - though this would require me to get 4 speeders on Thurs, and while I am not unwilling, I am thinking the only time I'd use them is at 1750/2k (though would be nice to have I guess lol).

I am sure the internets will help me decide as the week goes on anyway.

  14. After tonight, storm trooper list!

I much prefer the tactical flexibility it gives you, and that added melta/shooty punch. While the PBS gave you that last stitch draw last week, I dont think that can replicate the options the ST's give you between infiltrate/outflank/deepstrike. Not to mention they create more options w/ melta striking in say objective games where you may be a bit more reserved w/ the troops?

And once again good games, 2-0 to the Stormtroopers (both pretty much tablings even if they didnt quite get played out) vs the 1 draw with the PBS (which again if that got played out may have actually gone my way! though we'll never know ;P).

My vote is definatly the ST's.
