Killswitch - Thoughts On Next Tournament Army?

So I’m considering a new army, but where to begin? I have done fairly well with my SW+IG, taking home 2nd place at the Northern Warlords GT and going undefeated at the recent Warp Quake (1 loss as we woke up late on the Sunday and missed game 1 due to a heavy night out..was worth it!).

I am now looking for a codex which gives me plenty of options to play, model and do well with but I am stuck. Rather than jump the bandwagon like my fellow authors (Nids are the new thing it seems) and avoiding using the ridiculously overpowered Daemons, I want something which not only does well but will visually look cool. I am stuck with these two options:

Eldar & Chaos.

Ive spoken to many people about the Seer Council rising up the ranks in 6th ed, but never got round to building the army because I was worried the FAQ’s may nerf some of my ideas (baron gaining Fortune) or a new codex coming soon (rumours suggest not till around 2015).

The list I am thinking of, or there about, is:

Farseer: 165pts
Fortune, Doom, Spirit Stones, Runes of Witnessing & Jetbike.

Eldrad: 210pts

The Baron: 105pts

9 Warlocks: 465pts
4 Destructors, Enhance & Embolden.

5 Rangers: 120pts

3 Jetbikes: 76pts
Shurican Cannon.
3 Jetbikes: 76pts
Shurican Cannon.
3 Jetbikes: 66pts

5 Dark Eldar Warriors: 40pts

3 War Walkers: 180pts
6 Scatter Lasters.
3 War Walkers: 180pts
6 Scatter Lasters.
3 War Walkers: 150pts
3 Scatter Lasters & 3 Shurican Cannons.

Aegis Defence Line: 50pts

So basically this list relies completely on the deathstar which is very hard for most armies to deal with. Not something I like doing but seems like it works well. My buddy Gaz Jones has been using a similar setup and has been thus far successful, so perhaps its worth giving it a whirl.

Now onto Chaos. Personally I have soo many list ideas its unreal, from Nurgle + Epidemius to Noise Marine Spam. In the end ive gone for a fairly balanced approach:

Chaos Lord: 180pts
Mark Of Nurgle, Chaos Mutation, Bike, Black Mace & Sigil Of Coruption.

The Masque: 100pts

9 Flamers: 207pts

5 Plague Bearers: 75pts

24 Cultists: 106pts

24 Cultists: 106pts

10 Chaos Space Marines: 160pts
2 Plasma Guns.

Helldrake: 170pts
Helldrake: 170pts

5 Chaos Spawn: 180pts
Mark Of Nurgle.

5 Havocs: 115pts
4 Autocannons.
5 Havocs: 115pts
4 Autocannons.
5 Havocs: 115pts
4 Autocannons.

Aegis Defence Line: 50pts

Some solid shooting, fair amount of templates, The Masque to help move those models into template range & the lord pushes up alongside the Spawn.

So what do people think? Have you lot thought on what’s next for your tournament army? If you want feedback from someone who has had real hand experience from the UK’s meta, feel free to email me on alexflyf@hotmail.co.uk

  1. "not jumping on bandwagon" he says.. Eldrad..what a whore. Yeah, this is also a highly original concept dude...Cheeky hypocrit fucker ;) x

Eldar is so very top heavy. Like you say, it totally relies on the Council, which everyone learnt how to play against about 3-4 years ago. Very little has changed at all for the council and the way it operates. I get that it is tough, it has always been tough with fortune etc, Stealth is an added bonus for sure.. as is Hit and Run, but there are straight forward solutions.
Yes, it takes the whole army, but when you are not pressing forward with anything else at the same time... well, it's ok.
I guess if you pushed 2 units of War Walkers on an outflank they could add pressure, but then they are not behind the aegis, getting fortuned cover saves, guide and their target unit doomed...

You don't need me to tell you the troops are light. Mobile firepower or fast units will get to them and waste them sharpish. Of course, some builds will suffer extremely against this...

Could I perhaps suggest a Beastmaster unit instead of a few bits? I think a second viable, mobile threat could cause some harm.. Although with you already spending 500 points on HQ choices I not sure where you'll get the points..

Chaos - "avoiding using the overpowered demons" 9 Flamers?
Pretty solid, only thoughts would be whether or not you truly need the Masque? They will be devastating enough, you could rock 5 bikes to accompany the Lord and MoN Spawn? Perhaps find some points for melta on bikes for fast moving delivery..?

    1. Eldar - Not many peopl have been using Eldar around the UK so far, and it was the first amy I wanted to use in 6th. I was worried they would get a new Dex soon but judging the rumours that's not going to happen now so hence the potential candidate.

The Beastmaster unit will just drag either my ranged support, troops or Council down and to be honest, all need to be at the level they are at now.

Troops suck but then that has always been the case for Eldar. Bare in mind the Council can contest more than 1 objective and in one mission, the Walkers can capture objectives.

As for Chaos, yes I know, 9 flamers is party of those OP Daemons I spoke of, however I am not using screamers, nor am I using Fateweaver which enhances those units tenfold :) Lets not forget, it's only 9 not 27 haha :D

The flamer templates will help me dramatically against units hogging behind Defense lines going to ground etc.

The Masque is there soley for those flamer templates. To be honest, for 100pts I can't see another HQ choice as useful with this type of army. Sure I could spend more points for some nasty combat support, but I don't think I realy need that.

As for the bikes, I'd love a unit of bikes, but 5 isnt enough. The spawn gives the Lord (who sits infront and the 5 spawn touch his base) 15 ablative wounds to "look out sir" to. By touching his base, none of them are the nearest so the wounds are randomly allocated, meaning I wont have to take the wounds solely on one model. T6 even without cover (I can get cover easy with Bikes/beasts) are tough to take down. This means the Lord is a constant threat.

I chose the Mace over the Khorne lord simply because of things like Hive Tyrants and what nt with T9. The str 7 AP 2 axe will only go so far, with the ammount of MC's around i think the +d6 attack wounding on 2's with a potential to instant kill models is amazing.

  2. I think Council will be doing a lot of hard work in your games!! But it is work they can do at least! Have you played much with it yet? Fair enough on the beastmasters...on Eldrad, how you running him? Behind the aegis with ranger and guiding/fortuning Walkers etc? It seems a lot for 210? I know he has Divination and can do 3...but could you just use Guide/Fortune regular Seer? Save some points for troops or bulking jetbikes? Get in RoWarding too..mind you, thats about 130 so you only gain 80 points...

Thought about FW units? Hornets for examples?

Chaos - Fair enough on Masque.. you'll not get much better in HQ for what you want.. Good idea with the Beasts for wound allocation..

Mace is a beast, love it.. Perfect for smacking around tough stuff..

    Didn't fancy screamers in this?

  3. Well the Council does a LOT of damage. people forget they have Hit & Run with the Baron, so once they hit combat, they can then bounce around all over the table and choose their fights if need be. They can't be tarpitted, fling away only to flame away with their Destructors again, very annoying and you cannot ignoe them as they are so fast.

Eldrad actually rolls for Invisibility on Telepathy, if he gets it after or before 3 rolls he rolls 1 on Divination for Precience. He sits back with the Pathfinders but can push up if need be :)

FW units seem to be slowly on the decline as to which tournies allow them, so a little concerned to dish out on that much money on a hunch.

Screamers, well, that WOULD make me a Hypocrit ;) <3 I wouldn't want to be like the rest of you fucker's "Oh yeah I've wanted to do Nids for years" blah blah blah, fuck offffff Hahahahaha!!!

  4. Haha..bitch.. you can check out the very first few posts on the blog if you want evidence of my hardcore, long term commitment to Nids.
Or you may see an army of half painted randomness..which doesn't really show anything! ;)

Sue me. They are cool and I've been a good boy for an entire year only playing Crons and the occasional Wolf army. Andy wants new toys dammit!

Invisibility is nice.. Shrouded isn't it to one unit in 24"? Handy for the War Walkers behind a Defence Line, the Rangers are cover bosses anyway.. or I guess Eldrad could tag it onto the Council if they are close enough, although with the Baron's Stealth and Fortune it might be a bit overkill.. but if you really need them alive..may be a shout.

I thought it seemed like more FW was being allowed, especially with the GT Heats saying yes to it..
