Logan Evolution

Yea Yea I know I haven't done my Blog wars 2 reports yet but I did shite so the motivation has been somewhat lacking. Anyway I wanted to talk about the evolution of my Logan wing before I submit the list for Caledonian uprising on the 22nd December.

I was ready for jacking in the concept after Blog Wars but on reflection I realised the list was fine it was just my playing that did me in. The inclusion of Melta was a definite good thing over plasma and give the list what it needed. One thing I noticed about the list was that I needed to commit my troops to the fight and take the brunt of whatever nasties the enemy threw at me. This mean't that my troops took a beating and more often than not a big beating leaving them either too depleted or wiped out.

I've decided the Wolf Guard are the way to go with this list, they Grey Hunters are good but so are the Wolf Guard and who doesn't want more Cyclones? So with Grey Hunters being swapped out Wolf Guard I still need to decide what direction the rest of the list needs to take.

Enough bullshit lets look at the lists.

List 1:-

Logan Grimnar: 275pts

Rune Priest: 110pts

Living Lightning, Jaws & Chooser of the Slain.

Wolf Priest: 110pts

Saga of the Hunter.

Lone Wolf: 85pts

4 Rockets.

5 Long Fangs: 115pts

4 Rockets

5 Long Fangs: 150pts

4 Multi-meltas. Drop Pod.

Total: 1850pts

First things first I didn't write this list, this is one of Killswitch's creations. I like it, I like it a lot. It includes the old classic Logan bomb but instead of Arjac its got a Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter to give the unit a nice 3+ cover save. The unit has potential and seriously puts pressure on the enemy and brings some serious Melta to the list.

I am concerned about the pod though, if played wrong it can really balls things up so I will have to be careful. I am mindful there are armies that are a bad match up for it as well but that's the case with any unit you take. It still chucks out 18 missiles a turn and has 25 scoring bodies which could be more to be honest but its not really an issue.

Here's list 2:-

Logan Grimnar: 275pts

Rune Priest: 110pts

Living Lightning, Jaws & Chooser of the Slain.

Lone Wolf: 85pts

Storm Shield, Chain fist & Terminator Armour.

Lone Wolf: 85pts

Storm Shield, Chain fist & Terminator Armour.

5 Wolf Guard: 140pts

Terminator with Cyclone & 1 with Combi-melta.

5 Wolf Guard: 140pts

Terminator with Cyclone & 1 with Combi-melta.

5 Wolf Guard: 140pts

Terminator with Cyclone & 1 with Combi-melta.

10 Wolf Guard: 310pts

2 Terminators with Cyclones 1 x Powerfist 1 Chainfist. 3 x Combi Meltas

Thunderwolf, Storm Shield, Thunderhammer 110 pts

Thunderwolf, Storm Shield, Powerfist 105pts

5 Long Fangs: 115pts

4 Rockets.

5 Long Fangs: 115pts

4 Rockets

5 Long Fangs: 115pts

4 Rockets

Total: 1850pts

Bit more of a standard Loganwing list, with Rockets galore coming in at 22 shots a turn and 6 Combi Melta's when things get up close and dirty. The Thunderwolves are in there as a fast support unit to be used very much like a Lone Wolf to assist the Wolf Guard units in combat and to take on big nasties. I'd quite happily throw one of these into a Small to average size MEQ unit if it came to it, the main use though is to support the Wolf Guard and add some close combat punch.

So what do we think? Logan bomb or play it safe and spam the fuck out of Krak missiles.

  1. I'd be interested to see how the thunderwolves perform in the second list. The idea of using them like Lone Wolves is intriguing. I think I might throw up a post discussing them if for no other reason than to decide for myself which might be better.

It certainly frees up the elites slots for more shiny things but then loganwing doesn't really have that problem anyway.

  2. I like the new tough talking..

I prefer the Rockets, having played against it I think it has the most utility. Im underwhelmed by the Thunderwolves

  3. I love Loganwing..and ran it for quite a while last year.
My issue with it was something you mention early on in the article...that yo have to really commit your troops to the fight in order to get work done.
This typically resulted in a depleted troops section, tough to win on C&C and SG.
I ran Lone wolves over TWC, although both are really good, I mean running both in the same list, Lone Wolves for up close and personal and TWc for the threat range.
    S10 Fist is win.

Loads of Missiles is good, I ran a regular list with 20-22 missiles at the July Brighton Warlords to a mediocre finish.. but that was my list design over anything..

Drop Pod.. hit and miss. good deep strike defense and you are screwed..as in, they'll not hit an optimal target and will take a torrent of fire in return.

Stealth Priest is dependent on terrain and said terrain being close to the location of the pod's target!
Good players..of which I've heard there are a few...109 ish...going to Caledonian will simply keep their prime targets away from decent area terrain and wrap up, even if that is with grey hunters/marines whatever..I've done it to great success versus BA DoA armies and it is very useful (using marines as bubblewrap vs deep striking melta - obv not vs demo vets), then mount up and drive away or torrent and charge.

On the other hand, terrain is usually available and the extra 'Melta' range of MM reduces the impact of bubblewrap and need for aggressive positioning to a degree..
The 3 IC's with multiple wounds and wound allocation will help keep the unit alive for the first turn, unless the whole enemy army fires at them (likely)...

Over the two, I prefer the drop-pod to be loaded with just 4-6 combi melta dudes also armed with a few flamers for mix n match target shooting..
For example, getting the drop on a load of baron's Hellions or nuking that BA deathstar LR...
Then you don't mind if they die after as they dont half 600 points of dudes in...max 100.
