Grey knights - Cheap as chips?

Alot of dudes are posting up their Coteaz themed lists to get access to cheap troops and therefore cheap transports...well, the transports are not cheap but the lower cost of the troops (warrior acolytes) balances this out.

I think the basic grey knight is a great unit and I don't think you have to have a Libbie to make them work. Everyone has figured out that it can be a pain to get the Libbie mounted up without taking a chimmie, LR or SR.

Fuck the last two. I'd only take the Storm Raven if I was taking 2/3 of them with psycannon Dreads and termies as troops... hmm... anyway:

So here is my take on 1750, like the previous post, keeping it cheap is important for GK imho.

Coteaz
Warrior Acolytes x 5, Razorback, AssCannon, Psybolts
Warrior Acolytes x 5, Razorback, AssCannon, Psybolts
Warrior Acolytes x 5, Razorback, AssCannon, Psybolts
Grey Knight Strike Squad x 10, 2 x Psycannon, Rhino
Grey Knight Strike Squad x 10, 2 x Psycannon, Rhino
Grey Knight Strike Squad x 6, 1 x Psycannon,Razorback, AssCannon, Psybolts
Purifiers x 5, 2 x Psycannon, Rhino
Rifleman Dread w Psybolts
Rifleman Dread w Psybolts
Rifleman Dread w Psybolts

1750 on the nose.

Cheap troops open up the Razors and armour saturation with fortitude making av11 a bit better and av12 fire support units even better, especially with ease of covering a dread.

Said cheapo units can stay in reserve, on foot, coming in later in the game to take home objectives or stay in rides on board to be speed bumps or nuisances that need dealing with, or simply making that Razorback scoring.

The GK body count is pretty damn good...having 31 Grey Knights is reasonable I think...maxed out number of Troops FTW!

Good Psycannon count, which can, using the rhino move - disembark - fire, get into midfield very early (turn 1 with deployment) and get shooting straight away.

Riflemen do what a rifleman does...only better.

Overall, we have 10 hulls, 10 threat vectors for anti tank, and enough GK bodies to take on hordes in CC using movement and overwhelming pressure on one or two elements of the army, having crippled any mobility or big dogs on the way in.

For 1500.... I'd just strip out one unit of 10 Grey Knights. Still having 21 GK's and 5 troop units...

Thoughts guys?

  1. Certainly a viable option, probably the best way for GK's to fit into the MSU / Vehicle spam - and tbh its a pretty strong list as the counter punch with the purifiers and GKSS's are no joke due to their ability.

This is the sort of list I'd prob run with all the tanks I have left from my BA Mech - though I am still wanting to go down a pure GK route - I am liking the idea of the techmarine and purifiers that andy suggested.

(Also going to fire over a post about my DW list / DW lists in general at some stage today to keep in the bank if you need a post Ven)

  2. Can't say I've looked over the codex in enough detail to build a list and I know it was only a White Dwarf list and they are never good but I was amazed that the 2500 points game in this months battle report only had ~45 models in it. With that every loss will hurt

  3. 45 @ 2.5k? jeez. I don't get the armies featured in WD...why fucking bother sometimes with the shit they put out...it's just a marketing magazine/sales vessel.. such a waste...

@ Bully - love your DW stuff mate, so feel free to fire it over!

I skipped over the techmarine to be honest, think i'll check him out again and see what he offers...

  4. Techmarine is great. Rad grenades for 10 points, independent character status, finally, hammerhand so the squad can use its other powers, full servo harness as standard. Oh and he can take servo skulls. I'm almost certainly taking one.

  5. servo skulls are boss... on powers...will you not want him using his re-roll to repair power alot of the time? Also, what cost is this fucker? 99 with Rad and triple skulls?

What you giving up for that? At 1500 its a big one, at 1750 it can fit comfortably enough, but keeping the GK cheap and simple is hard enough...

Not sure I'm convinced of the benefits. Maybe I'm not really thinking enough..

  7. Yeah thats the old trick from the DH book as well - people have been shoving GK Hero's into Chimera's of the Imperial Guard for a while as well.

Not a new thing, but glad people are seeing it - bit disappointed people think its an exploit tough, its been used since 3rd Ed.
