Back from the UKGT!!

Hey guys, back from the GT and am I tired or what. I had a fantastic weekend, and was great to see some new and old faces. Met a few top blokes and put a few names to faces which was nice.

I have to say, this has to be the biggest event of the year for the UK as of now. Since the loss of the Throne of Skulls final which had over 130 of the UK's top players all in one room, there hasn't been anything to replace it, till now.

So how did I fare? Well what can I say, my new list (different to what was posted in the last blog post) did very well. I think this is a list I am completely sold on and will be using more often than not over my “boring guard”. Here is the list I took:

Rune priest: 110pts
Chooser, Living lightning, Jaws.

Lone Wolf: 85pts
Chainfist & storm shield.

Lone Wolf: 85pts
Chainfist & storm shield.

5 Wolf Guard: 195pts
2 Power fists & combi meltas.
2 combi meltas.
1 termie armour & cyclone.

7 Grey Hunters: 160pts
Meltagun, banner, Rhino with dozer blades.

7 Grey Hunters: 160pts
Meltagun, banner, Rhino with dozer blades.

5 Grey Hunters: 155pts
Meltagun, Las plas razorback.

5 Grey Hunters: 155pts
Meltagun, Las plas razorback.

5 Grey Hunters: 75pts
Flamer.

6 Long Fangs: 215pts
5 Rockets, Las plas razorback

6 Long Fangs: 215pts
5 Rockets, Las plas razorback

6 Long Fangs: 140pts
5 Rockets

Total: 1750pts.

As you can all see, it’s fairly MSU (multiple small units)and has a fair amount of long range firepower (more than most wolf armies). This mixed with my Lone wolves (who performed great in 4 out of the 6 games) made the list fairly strong and it was capable of handling most opponents. Due to this, I was able to walk to each table with confidence no matter what army I faced.

I came 10th overall, which I was fairly pleased with, however at the same time fairly gutted. I reached table 1 on the final game to face Paul Burke, a very strong player using a typical IG army with 6 Hydras, 2 CCS, Platoon, Vets, 3 Vendettas and a psyker battle squad. This game was basically for 1st place & overall champion.

I faced an identical list in round 4, which after going 2nd, I pulled of a big win, capturing both objectives in capt & control and winning by around 400VPs. With this I was fairly confident to face guard, however the dice gods left me. To say I was outplayed would be unfair on myself as with the terrain, bad dice rolls and Dawn of war, it was a hard game indeed. The game was Killpoints, and after the game went to turn 7, giving me 2 more turns to pull up ahead (which was actually, looking back, not that difficult) I still failed to do it. My pen rolls were stupidly bad. Paul did everything right, and I can’t see anything I did wrong, except perhaps the placement of one or two units (but not knowing where the guard will come on meant I had to spread out). I will give a more detailed report in the future as it was such a tense and close game throughout, its well worth a right up (the end score was 10-8 KP’s to Paul, 1 being due to one Lone wolf living). I won the VP’s by 18pts, that’s how close it was.

Overall I am exceptionally pleased how my list performed and how I played it. I havn’t played wolves for a long time, but after using them again, I know now that they are my army of choice all the time, every time. My overall result was 4 wins, 1 draw and a narrow loss. I learned a lot from every game, and had great games throughout. Looking forward to next year already, and I hope to see all of you there.

  6. One thing I loved about the GT was how different EVERY Space Wolves army was.

I finished 9th with a very different list to Alex, although I could put most of my points down to JOTWW.

Kudos to Alex though. I must have asked him a million questions about the different armies in the top 20 that I might be facing.

Now I need to play test some Lone Wolves...

  8. Congrats to you too Adam, well done bro. I think it is an immense testament to the SW codex that it is just so flexible and competitive all in the same breath...that you can bring tough units that have great character too is a beautiful thing.

  9. Nice one Adam and KS - glad to see 2 top 10's!

I liked both your lists as well so glad to see you both happy with the performances. Any chance of some summaries of the games / battle reports? (Or picture's!)

I have to say I really do like Lone Wolves, something about a nigh unkillable terminator that doesn't cost 275 points seems very attractive to me!

Sounds like a tough break in the last round though.

  11. Nice writeup Alex - and bad luck in your final game.

It was my guard you beat in game 4, and nicely done it was too - that list worked well, and you were my only defeat during the weekend.

I finished 12th in the end, a couple of places behind you. Look forward to facing you again soon!

  12. Hi richard, nice to see you on the blog :)!

Was a great and hard game, I think it deserved a draw, but some bad luck and some (finnaly) good luck in the last few turns turned it into a win for me.

Glad to hear you did well to pull up the placings and come 12th, gratz mate :D The list is a huge improvement on the vendetta list you had before thats for sure aha.

Yes look forwards to our next game ^_^
