Wolves: 1st place at 6th ed tournament! CHAMPION!

I won!
Whoot!
First 6th edition tournament in the UK
(For me at least, possibly for everyone? of a decent size? not sure) down at the Brighton Warlords, 1850, 6 games over the 2 days.
Standard rulebook missions and deployments.

Think there were 40 guys in total, 2 dropouts on the second day (work and a migraine). Not huge, but far from insignificant.
Usual mix of tournament players, club regulars and assorted others.

I played:
Game1: Space Marines (WIN)
Game2: Space Marines (WIN)
Game 3: Space Wolves (DRAW)
Game 4: Space Marines (WIN)
Game5: Necrons (WIN)
Game 6: Necrons (WIN)

I avoided the only army that I didn't want to play and that was Lee Brown's 3 Storm Raven list (only wanted to avoid cause I didn't think I could roll that many Prescient Missile Launcher 6's! lol)

The Crons were tough, huge numbers of Wraiths, Destroyer Lords, Chariots, Immortals, Barges ..you know, the standard nasty shit..

The Wolves were similar to my own but featured Bran Redmaw for outflanking nastiness and another unit with OBEL.. tough for 'Linebreaker' secondary and 'Slay the Warlord'..23 outflanking Grey Hunters, lots of missiles, lots of on table Grey Hunters.. quite standard with a very nice twist (Bran).

Marines featured 3 killers- Fliers, Proteus Land Raider (Scouting and immune to Melta! wtf!) and a SPARTAN ASSAULT CARRIER!!!!! fuck. lots of Terminators, Marneus Calgar TWICE, lots of troop bodies, Orbital Bombardments vs foot horde Grey Hunters... not nice.

Think of this as a teaser trailer...like the moody 2 new Man of Steel posters.. think of me as Russell Crowe/Jor El warming you up for the main event..except you don't need to wait til 2013 for my follow up post..  I'll follow up with Battle Reports for the whole tournament over 2 posts over the next 2 days.
I also have what I think is going to emerge as THE 6th ed Necron list at tournaments, certainly until everyone gets Flakk Missiles, then it goes back to being Space Wolves as the top dogs. Until Chaos comes out anyway!

  1. Nice congrats, what sort of list did you go with, standard 5th wolf list or something new for 6th?

    Wolf Guard x9 - 317 - 2 x TDA, 1xCML, 9 Combis (7 melta, 2 PLasma), 3 x Meltabombs, (everyone joins a grey hunter bar the small 5 man pack, leaves 4 x CM, Drop Pod – Melta Strike Team)
    Lone Wolf -95 - CF/SS/TDA/1 x Wolf
    Lone Wolf -95 - CF/SS/TDA/1 x Wolf
    Grey Hunters x5 – 115 –Meltagun, Rhino
    Grey Hunters x5 – 115 –Meltagun, Rhino
    Grey Hunters x5 – 115 –Meltagun, Rhino
    Grey Hunters x 10 – 160 - Plasmagun x 2
    Grey Hunters x 10 – 160 - Plasmagun x 2
    Grey Hunters x 5 – 75 -Flamer
    Long Fangs x5 – 115 - 4 Missile Launchers
    Long Fangs x5 – 115 - 4 Missile Launchers
    Long Fangs x5 – 115 - 4 Missile Launchers

Pretty simple Wolf list. Nothing flashy. Not that much has changed from 5th - 6th to invalidate or force too many changes on wolves except the general mech effectiveness reduction and the creation of fliers.

    Thanks for the congrats!

    1. Relatively.
Only encountered one army with fliers so that was good.. kept it pretty straight forward..

Jury still out on rhinos. Foot Plasma is sweet.

    2. Oh and Lone Wolves with the little doggy for extra charge range when you want it? Savagely awesome.

    3. Yea I'm digging foot Plasma and Lone Wolves, only reason I'm keeping Rhino's in the list at the minute is to provide a cheap search light (essential against Crons) and to block line of sight to things like Draigo so I can snipe off his Paladouches.

    4. Sneaky bitch.
I have found them to be fine if I go first, as my expectations are for death, but at least the unit gets transportation to where they wanna be.
Blocking line of sight and turning on the torch.. probably about as good as they get.
Guess we all just need to adjust to how they work now.. or not lol

  4. nice, well done. great start, and shows that the same old lists can still do well.
i wish i could find it in me to care about 40k and 6th, but right now but after my first game i sort of gave up mentally. very odd.

    1. Yeah, it was only a slight tweak, but created quite a different play style, especially with the rhino GH packs.

But at the end of the day, it's still 40k...how different can it be!

You not enjoying your gaming at the minute bud? I really do enjoy it. There are some great little differences that add up to a whole lot to some armies.

You need to get your arse up here for a real game!

  8. Congrats bro,

Its good to see you finally winning one, but really is the death knell for me and 40K, this is not the sort of list I want to be playing (with or against) to be "successful" - its the 40K I just stopped enjoying at the end.

Thought that said, my buddy out of the blue said he really quite fancied some 2nd edition 40K, of which I think I still have some rule books around, so I might go back to hero hammer for a while (and my Mepishton 30 terminator army, HI-YA!)

  9. Thanks mate. Yeah, I've been knocking on the door at Brighton for a while..
Shame you feel that way, I also think that it's far too early to make that kind of judgement about what is good.. for example, I'll be playing a Necron army with 4 fliers and some totally different toys that'll be used to great effect, Voltaic Staves.. all armies have that ability to change with the times, new rules means new choices, allies can open that up even further..

I genuinely think this is a great edition of 40k.. But you have to respect peoples opinions.. :)

  10. Played from 3rd edition on, right now i live the new rules, i just don't dig flyers... And the whole artificial thing that no army has an answer to them right now.

I am content that new SW turn out quite strong but gotta say i dig the heroic aspect more than the 100% efficient GH and Long fangs maximized Armies.

I can't quite understand that Necrons got further buffed by 6th, i find it really annoying. 5th you could handle them but i feel now with 6th really every single ruling and advantage goes their way. I am not quick to call an army op but they probably as close to it ad an army can get!
