I need a new game!! HELP!

I need a new game. I love 40K, but I am just a little tired of the edition and apart from my Crons (who I love but have no work to do on them) and my reborn Eldar (who I am currently working on for my amusement), I have no plans whatsoever to engage in more large scale 40K army building until 6th.

I've got complete Marines, Blood Angels and Space Wolves painted, Eldar painted, Necrons painted, Imperial Guard painted (and um..SOLD!), some other random bits too... I think that is PLENTY for one edition of collecting and playing this game.

Until this day then? I want a new game, sure I play Malifaux and Infinity..but I want something a little ...realistic? Gritty? Less....sci fi?

I think the answer lies somewhere inbetween that trio. I have narrowed it down to either DUST Warfare and Dystopian Wars. Flames is out due to terrain requirements..

The deciding factor? eugh..don't know!

Dystopian is cheap as chips, massively different from the scale of 40k and other skirmish games. The models aer cool, you don't need a huge number..they'd be dead quick to paint, but also could put a lot of effort into them and it wouldn't take too much time.. I'm interested in Air and Sea, not so much the Land stuff... bit too...Epic lol.

DUST is new, the models are very very cool ...but.. the rulebook is twice the cost of Dystopian, more models are required and well.. whilst the setting is really cool...the scale of the games is very similar to 40k-esque games. It is also about twice the price to get started.. wedding remember? Cheap for a little fling is key!

It's a tough shout, especially as there are not that many people playing Dystopian in the area.. although Stargazer and friend of the Sons, Mark play. Bringer of Death and Kabalite are not going to get stuck in to Dystopian as they don't like the models.. fiar enough.. each to their own..
Any of you lot play Dystopian Wars or have any insights to offer? The Land is not that interesting to be fair, or at least to me.. but the Air and Sea .. yeah, I can't wait to try it out.. I'm ordering...now!

  1. Its a tough choice, cause you are probaly gonna need a second dystopian wars force so you can get more people playing, if you have both forces then you can help others get interested so the setup cost of both may be the same (depending on how many people play Dust in your area).

    1. Well, we have 2 dudes at least at the club that play..so that's not bad..and there are a few others that have been down in the past that play..so I'll see if we can grab a few of them back down..

No one plays Dust in the area that I know of.. certainly not at the club. Sure I might be able to entice others.. but this way, with DWars I can get games in without having to coerce others..

      you tried either bud?

  2. I have a very very similar article (with a slightly different slant) in writing atm ven, weird.

Game wise, if your looking pure tabletop I have zero clue, but if you want to expand your mind into other skill or intellectual based games there are plenty out there.

I am still resisting the urge to give it all up and join the super team for Guild Wars 2.

    1. seriously, i will never understand you, lol. why does it have to all or nothing? why not do a little bit of everything like most of us do?

    2. Polar. Lil' bit of all sorts is fine.. This'll be my 4th gaming system and I know I pale in comparison to many gamers...

Dude, don't throw it all in again! You can still play computer games as well as wargames!!

    3. indeed, i will certainly be playing Guild Wars 2, i have already pre-purchased, but it isn't going to stop me playing 40k as well!

    4. it should have read "give up the resistance" opposed to "give it all up".

To put it in context, I currently have a team of amongst the best pvpers around on one hand beating down my door, on the other hand I have one of the best teams to game full stop on the other asking me to play guild wars.

Luckily for me I have very little to prove in gaming so its a bit easier to resist.

To put it further in context, if I was to play with the PVP team, most days I'd end up playing 4 or 5 hours a day, especially given GW2 has daily pvp events and premier / invite events. Which is awesome. I'd imagine the team would put in somewhere around 40 or 50 hours together a week. Thats a hell of a lot of commitment when my unaccounted for time is probably not even 50 hours a week.

  6. I would suggest Dystopian Wars, as a distraction. I love the game and I love the models, but it isn't anything more than a beer & pretzels game. If that is what you are looking for, great! It's rules are just a bit weak in my eyes. It is a blast to play with friends though (Exploding dice rock). It just isn't tournament worthy, but is 40K really worthy itself?

I only play Land and Sea myself since water is more interesting and unique to me. Check my blog out for an easy way to make a game board, too!

If you want something realistic than I would suggest Flames of War. It's cheap compared to 40k and very quick to paint up. The rules are solid like a rock, too.

  7. I'd say Dystopian Wars. I never played epic and DW is easy to paint and having buying 2 starters online is very inexpensive.

Still the DUST core revised set is calling to me for some reason. But worry it has a painting feel of PP

  8. Hey Gigawatts...cheers for dropping by, beer & pretzels is what I'm looking for from this 'distraction'... nice one.. I'll check it out now man!
I did think about Flames.. but the terrain is so different...maybe over the summer..although if the new 40K ed. hits..well, that'll be me sorted once again..

  10. Bro forget that and play warmachine or hordes bro. I love the system yes its not true reality but it isn't as sci fi. Investment isn't bad at all compared to GW products and the rules set is solid! Id say check it out.

    1. Hey Paul,
The models though man, the models... they suck hairy dog dick!
Soo many peeps say get in and the rules are tight and truly competitive.. but I can't get over the models.. they simply do not appeal to me, which is a problem for a miniature war game!

    2. Have you checked all of them out honestly I am of a different opinion I like the models a lot. It's a blast to send a massive robot crashing at your opponent however if you don't like the steam engine style then look at hordes. Legion of Ever Blight has some amazing looking models.

BTW did you try out that crons list i sent ya?

      Delete
    3. Ha! I'll check it out..

The Crons didn't get tried out no, but we've got a games night on Sunday and I've got them all assembled and ready to roll..had a load of Lychguard leftover from Wraith/Cryptek conversion.. ready to roll!

  11. Like Paul J., I'm a huge warmachine/hordes fan so I'd love to sell you on that, however, if you're ONLY looking for a beer and pretzel game, then Dystopian would be my recommendation here.

My friends and I play it in between WM league seasons and as a break from playing the same game for months at a time. It's a great refreshing little game to play.
    I think you'll like it.

    1. The way you describe your use of the game.. that's exactly what I feel I need at the minute, just a bit stale is ol'40K.. for me anyway..bring on 6th ed.

    1. Andy, if you were up here, I'd happily go halves on rules and sets etc to reduce start up costs, but without the promise of a regular game..

Actually, to be honest..I think I want to play a game on a totally different scale. Dust still is a skirmish - 40K size game.. I want to move around fleets, not boots... 40K still works for that lol

    2. in that case it is a great pity Epic is is difficult to get hold of, because that is a really fantastic game.

    3. I had it...Imperator Titan and all...no idea where that is now..bin I think!

  13. I also love Warmachine, but there a few things that make some Warhammer players mad. First, no cover/armor saves really (except Tough). Second, no chance to react during the enemy turn, so you don't get to hit back in CC. Third, there a lot of broken combos in EVERY faction. Thus, unless you read up on the tactics of all factions, you will get blindsided a few times.

I enjoy it and the models look pretty with very little effort.

    1. I've observed quite a few games of it at the club and at local gaming stores.. it just seems to me to be a silly concept.. walk towards each other for 2 turns, line up in some way about 12-18" apart, then one player wins. Usually, the dude who judged the distances right and has the longer range nasty combo.. am I wrong? That is the game!

  14. I am just entering the world of Dystopian Wars and been collecting the Navy and Air models (Blazing Sun). Like you my initial thoughts are to leave land to much later but leaning more towards not bothering with them at all. Lots of players have taken it up at my club as it is just so darn collectable and very easy to paint. Lots of the models require no gluing together at all!! However Flames of War is my core interest and it is a great game. Another beer and Pretzel game is Saga. 28mm that it is Dark Ages (Vikings etc). Lots of fun and small force sizes make it very easy to collect as well.
    cheers

    1. Hi Kiwi, Flames has very specific terrain that makes it a bit more expensive as a 'distraction' game for me..or else I'd get stuck right in!

I've not heard of Saga. I'll have a look, anywhere in particular to check it out?

      Cheers mate.
