3 weeks til next tourney! Time to stop messing about!

So! Tourney time HOOOOOO!

3 weeks til the next Sons tournament...we are off down to Brighton for the first Brighton Warlords 1850 40k Singles tourney.. always a great weekend packed with wicked games, Pete, John et al all run a tight ship and have a very solid set up..

Apart from pissing WYSIWYG...nazi bastard... grumble, grumble..

What will I run then?

I've run my Necrons for the past 3 tournaments so I think they will be the choice..
I've been running several armies through gauntlets to get by knowledge and play style right versus a wide pool of armies. However, I am ready to put the Crons through it too.. starting Monday they get a right smashing!

The other secret reason for running Crons? WYSIWYG!! Anyone that has been down to a BWL tournament knows it is tough to get those valuable soft scores and make a huge difference to placing. That and squad markings are worth about 10 points, plus painting scores.. I am going for max soft scores to try and maintain my placing on Rankings..

As the 12 month Rankings rolls around, this Brighton from last year has a solid result for me, so I need to replace it with a solid result.. no pressure...but Top 3 is required lol!!

Obligatory lists?

2 x Overlord - CCB (Gauss), Warscythe, Shackles
2 x Courts, each with Veil Tek and Pulse eEk
2 x 10 Immortals - Gauss (to teleport)
2 x 5 Warriors - either reserve fully or leave one off and load both Missiles into one foot squad..
5 x Wraiths with 3 Whip Coils
10 Scarabs
9 Scarabs
3 x Annihilation Barges w. Tesla Cannons

This is my personal favourite at the minute, but I do have a few other potent lists to run about.. such as:

2 x Overlord - CCB (Gauss), Warscythe

2 x Courts, each with Veil Tek and Pulse Tek
2 x 10 Immortals - Gauss (to teleport)
3 x 5 Warriors - either reserve fully or leave one off and load Missiles into 2 of the units..
3 x 10 Scarabs
3 x Annihilation Barges w. Tesla Cannons

This is the 'Basics' but in my opinion, is too over loaded with Scarabs.. there are a number of armies that theese guys simply will not have a good match up against.

So, I'm not going to throw all the lists up for consideration at once.. but these are the first 2 of my choices..
What do we think guys? Best to avoid being the extra man running Grey Knights? Or soon as placings are so important.. go for the throat and run boring but an effective GK army? Which would face a lot of mirror matches and NOT be WYSIWYG..

  2. Honestly Ven List 1 is the way to go. It gives you the most flexibility and bang for your buck. It has all the shooty you need, and even a good cc choice to either mop up troublesome back field units like fangs or to hold a death star for a bit. It also forces your opponent to make choice for splitting his fire. 5 av 13 hulls are always a good choice. As long as the scarabs much a few of the nasty vehicles they can then be your tarpit as well. All in all stay balanced!

    1. Instead of the Wraiths, maintaining balance as well, I could switch in 2 x Night Scythes? They will be protected for 2 turns and after that the damage from 5 TL Tesla Annihilators I've found to be pretty devastating?

  3. List one is much more geared towards tournament play, ie if something is good against scarabs, list 2 is in serious trouble! While armies that cannot deal with scarabs are still struggling and you have wraiths, which are awesome!

    1. Cheers for the opinion Embolden..its the out of left-field armies that sneak into the top tables that would present List 2 the most problems.. I've seen that already this year at tournaments..

      Or I could throw more Scarabs at what they can't deal with and go Stormlord!!

  4. Love that your running a single tourney list and tweaking, I think thats where your at your best.

    Prefer the first list - think scarab spam is a bit predictable and easier to prepare for, you just need the threat opposed to the all out masses of them.

  5. Much prefer the first - flexible, whilst still incorporating the 20 teleporting immortals that make this list a pain to deal with.

    Always worth looking at the field/terrain for a tournament too - which armies with strong players will you know you'll have to face?

    1. I know the terrain pretty well, I can be sure there willbe some LOS blocking centrally and roughly 1 large piece in each quarter, pretty standard and balanced for the most part..there are one or two tables that may be less dense or more dense..but pretty balanced tournament tables...

      The competition? The same sort of bunch show up each time, this time there are a few 'extra' players who've not attended before.. Franco Marrufo, Gary P and Dave S from 40KUK, the regular tough match ups are Rupert Penwarden and his crew (inc James Taylor, Mike MArlow, Luke Nurser, Rich Fielder, Steve Attoe) Peter Cooke is playing this time.. plus Sons guys (including Alex H, Andy Pattison/Atreides)..

      I may do a post breaking down these guys a bit.. but I only know a little bit about some and what they play.

    2. The lists usually go up about 1 week before Brighton - which makes for quite a competitive day since people have a very good idea of what the top tables will look like.

      Thing about Brighton is, like you say, its very similar player lists each time, you have a good idea about how they play and where they will be come the end of day 1 etc.

  7. The night scythe idea isn't a bad one as more tesla deconstructors are always good but what do you do against a melee death star. For example assault terminator squad in a land raider. The wraiths can still wrap them up and go toe to toe with them due to the invul save and hitting them first with whip coils. The tesla deconstructors while amazing will have a rough time taking them out.
