Blog Wars 2 - my drop guard list

With Blog Wars 2 on the doorstep I think it is about time I started to think about the list I plan on taking this time round. Last time I tried to embrace the spirit of the event by taking a fun yet still quite competitive list, and I had three great games, coming second only due to my own idiocy and some very good play by my final opponent. Oh and because Ven might have played ok as well I guess, but don't tell him that.
This time round I want to do the same, but obviously in a different way. Therefore I have diecided to tak a foot list. However, since I simply dont have the models to to a traditional foot horde, this is a foot list with a difference. Enter Imperial Armour 8. As well as being a good read, this book contains a pretty amusing drop troop codex for the Elysians. Now back in 4th edition when guard had a shit codex I ran a very successful drop list, so I thought it might be amusing to see what happens if I try to repeat that now in the age of mech.
So how am I going to do this then?
First of all, I want to point out that I am going to have to default on the special character requirement, since there are none in this codex! However, hopefully people (and more importantly a certain organiser) can forgive me when they see the list. I must say I think I have made the list about as competative as I can given the codex restrictions and the models I own but it is still a load of T3 models with armour of 5+ who only arrive when they feel like it (no way to manipulate reserves in this list).
So without further ado, here it is:
Company Command Squad - missile launcher, medic, officer of the fleet, homing beacon- 140
Storm Troopers - 5 men, 2 meltas - 105
Storm Troopers - 5 men, 2 meltas - 105
Veterans - 3 meltas, demolitions - 140
Veterans - 3 meltas, demolitions - 140
Veterans - 3 plasma guns, forward observers - 155
Veterans - 3 grenade launchers, forward observers - 125
Platoon Command Squad - 3 flamers - 55
Infantry Squad - demo charge, meltagun - 90
Infantry Squad - demo charge, meltagun - 90
Platoon Command Squad - 3 flamers - 55
Infantry Squad - demo charge, meltagun - 90
Infantry Squad - demo charge, meltagun - 90
Special Weapons Squad - 3 demo charges (yes really) - 100
Vendetta - heavy bolters - 140
Vendetta - heavy bolters - 140
______
1750
...pretty amusing no?
Now before you laugh and write it off completely, I should point out that every unit has deep strike, and I have three homing beacons (forward observers gives the squad stealth and a homing beacon). I also have 11 units of troops, who can rally at any strength within range of the officer (who sits at the back and hides). And finally of course, have you seen the number of demo charges?!? All I can say is i hope there are lots of people wasting points on night fighting necrons with loads of scarabs.
Seriously though, we all know this list sucks. It is completely one dimensional, and utterly unreliable. However, it will be great fun to play, and hopefully will present a challenge or two to some people.
If anyone has any thoughts, or just wishes to mock me, then feel free to do so!

I am lost for words Andy.
ReplyDeleteAnyway - Ven only won because I had that 50/50 chance to kill his Venom, and ofcourse rolled the 3. If it wasn't for him and his stupid pink fairies ....
Anyway, list looks good spirited. I was kind of hoping you'd look down a route similar to your last list, but change it up again - some what competitive, but not just spam, rinse and repeat.
Should be fun.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely dangerous for the troopers, as to shoot you can't spread out from the deep strike. A lot of the transports you trade the squad for are a lot cheaper than the squad you're essentially sacrificing. If you can one-two the contents too you can come out ahead, but that gets even trickier with scattering demo charges.
Back in 4th ed I ran a Light Infantry/Drop Troops list a lot that was fun, using the infiltrating guys to help hold ground and set up the Drop Troopers. Sadly hard to do with the Elysians, but hopefully the more mobile/longer ranged vendettas can help.
Good luck!
Good luck!
@Sonsoftaurus, you hit the nail on the head there, the whole concept of a deep striking army just doesnt work that well, ask any deamon player ;) still, i am determined to try something different!
ReplyDelete@Bully, i just dont have the models to do a conventional foot guard list. i estimate you would need something in the region of 15-20 heavy weapons teams to pull it off. i have 7...
I want to see tanks Andy! It just seems so wrong haha.
ReplyDeleteI like it though.
Are you around next weekend for a game? I should be about.
Platoon Command Squads can only take 1 special weapon!
ReplyDeleteHow about this one

ah, thanks for pointing that out, i shall change the list a little, perhaps adding a special weapon squad instead of the second platoon command squad!
ReplyDeleteand much as i'd like to field some more paper planes, i dont have any! ;)
Haha..awesome stuff.. time to review my deep strike defense protocols..
ReplyDeleteI like it.. it is ridiculously one dimensional though..
Alot depends on smushing stuff with demo charges doesn't it bud?
Which is of course is effective... will kill all those marines that will be there.. plenty of Grey Hunters to nuke - once they are out of the vehicles..
And yeah, those Demo's will kill Scarabs (my poor little guys..) but then, that's not what you should be shooting at!!
Whatever happens, it is going to be fun, and that is the point here isn't it really...
My only comment would be that in the final mission you won't be able to make the most of the deep strikes as if you're attacker you can't deep strike at all and the defender can only deep strike 3 units.
ReplyDeleteDrop me an email anyway and we can discuss it!
sent you an email mate.
ReplyDelete@Ven, glad you like it. i expect i will have one game where i just destroy everything in one amazing turn, and other game where i destroy myself in one terrible turn. could even be the same game, come to think of it!
now to build some demo charges to put on bases!
