2K Gauntlet: IG

In the run up to the Jolly Toys Outing 2K NOVA, we are running a few test games this week to face off against some of the nastier armies that we could be facing.

As both Necron player and a part time/occasional IG player, I am comfy with taking on Mech Guard, but for Kabalite's Dark Eldar and Bringer's Grey Knights it would definately be useful for these boys to get some practice in versus some killer Imperial Guard armies.

Plus, it helps me not be bored of my Necrons BEFORE the tournament..though this will be their 3rd tournament following Blog Wars 2 (1st) and Caledonian Uprising (11th from 116).. I'm hoping for another good finish for them and part of that is understanding how the top armies out there work.

So, the test gauntlet for Imperial Guard will be based on what I like at 1750, then just min/maxed to fuck and pushed to 2k. Now, this may not be the best IG army you'll see, but it is strong IMO and played by a damn fine player...*cough* me *cough* lol...

CCS 2 Plasma, Plasma Pistol, Autocannon Chimera - HHF
CCS 2 Meltaguns, Autocannon, Chimera - HHF
PCS 4 Meltaguns, Chimera - HHF
2 x 10 Infantry Squad, Meltagun, Autocannon, Chimera - HHF
3 x 10 Veterans, 3 Meltaguns, Autocannon, Chimera - HHF
Vendetta
Vendetta
Hellhound - HMM
2 x Hydra - HHB
2 x Hydra - HHB
2 x Hydra - HHB

This is 2k on the nose and can either operate at range as the defender or reactive force, alternatively it can pump out one first turn strike at range, then push up in your face whilst maintaining fire support.
It has a serious amount of AV12, mass S7 and S6.. a crap load of Melta, some decent Lascannons and plenty of Orders to fuck about with..

What do you guys think? Is this a decent representation of 2k IG? I know a lot of people would like a PBS in there for anti-Death Star duty, but frankly I don't give a fuck.. shoot til its dead..then shoot some more..

  1. Yep, that's pretty standard tournament fare right there! God I hate playing guard!

Anyway, hopefully I'll get a game in against you. I'm sure we'll bump into each other at least. See you on Saturday.

  3. nice list. i'd be tempted to try it but building more hydras is not appealing.

  4. I have to recommend you take a Manticore: Ignoring cover with s10 Ordnance is fantastic against a host of enemies and not just car parks (Scarabs for instance). While it isn't as tough as a Hydra squadron (2 AV 12 hulls allocating out glancing/pens) it is easier to hide behind the Chimera wall and will put the fear of God into many enemies that thought they could hide behind a wall. There's also the bonus of inflicting pinning tests: Marine squads without Sergeants will be testing on Ld 7 for example.

    2. I could be tempted by a Manticore, I used to run one, but I personally prefer direct fire.

Hydra sqaudrons are easy to get cover for, only one Hydra has to hide behind the wall in order to generate cover for the squadron..

Ignoring cover is the Colossus at S6/AP3.. the Manticore is Ordnance Barrage, units in area terrain still get cover. This is the most common type of terrain at tournaments, even ruins are classified as area from point to point..

They are amazing units though there is no denying that!

    3. i think he means it ignores cover if you fire indirectly over terrain

    4. @Atreides: I'm thinking of it imposing a -1 Ld penalty on pinning tests for some reason. Am I confusing previous editions with current rules or what?

And yes, I do mean that if you fire indirectly you deny cover saves. The main thing to remember with Newcrons is that you can use the Manti's S10 rockets to take out the Lord's barges without having to sacrifice a unit of Meltavets. Even if you don't wreck it but pen it you give your Hydras a realistic chance to bring it down before they have to deal with Night Scythes etc.

I would be worried for the Hydras against Newcrons because they are arguably more likely to be hit in their side armour by the fast moving Tesla and even with a -3 on the glancing table those things can ruin your day by silencing any return fire, let alone busting open your AV10 and dishing out damage before arcing happens.

  5. This is one of those lists that you hope and pray for first turn against and that you pop as much of that av12 as you possibly can. Mainly the hydras in particular. Though looking at it I think Necrons would be able to handle it, if the scarabs can tarpit many of the squads by wrecking enough chimeras in mid field. But i will say that is just a crap load of guns on the guard side yikes!

    1. I think the Crons can handle this. I have played vs mechanised Guard in two tournaments with them and plenty of practice vs mech guard locally.
The bodies drop to Annihilation Barges and Lords can charge with impunity, they sort out Guardsmen big time. The Hydras are the difficulty, searchlights from up front light up the targets and the 72" range Hydra Autocannons smash the shit out of the target..

It is a lot of guns! Let slip the dogs of war...

  6. Ven I've got a fun smoken tokens event coming up at 1500 point set up. Have you gotten together a 1500 point competitive list for the crons at all?
