The Proverbial Wall Hit, well SMASHED IN TO.

Its funny, Venerable just gets over hitting his wall, and I smash into it, face first, feet off the floor last night.

It was actually very odd, as I've been quite excited about my new project now for a little while, but between an idle chat with Atreides and Killswitch (separately) the cogs have been spinning in my head about the idea of competitive 40K gaming.

It was quite odd, I rocked up to the local GW last night for my typical weekly game, but it was pretty much a case of going through the motions, I've been used to doing it for the past year, and its automatic "Thursday night, game night". When I got there, I really should have just made my apologies and left, I already felt like I didn't want to play, and when my "easy game" got turned into "I'll actually have to think", I just dropped to the "I am going to do whatever I can to get out as quick as possible". Normally I finish my games around 9:30 or 10PM on a Thursday, last night, I was out the door at 8:25. At stages of the game I was either not moving units, or just taking them off the table when my opponent went to fire or charge at them. Really this is shocking, as he didn't get a game of it, though I do kind of think he secretly felt good beating me for once.

I think this night did more damage, than "just hitting the wall". First thing I did when I got home, early for once, was list my DW up on eBay. I am sure I'll regret it and not actually sell it in the end, but I am just in that mind state currently.

With Star Wars on the horizon, which will take up my "not so numerous" hours of free time, I am even wondering if my new project will get off the floor. Honestly, right now it looks like, if I don't play again before SW:TOR gets released, it will be me done, certainly until 6th hits. I think right now its quite important not to force it. I know come Monday I'll be tempted to book my usual table, but I think its probably good to stay away.

WHATS THE FUTURE HOLD (if there's one on the 40K horizon)?

Well, should I get started with this project, I am looking to do a Star Wars theme, using the Grey Knight book. I've actually bought / traded / found the majority of the bits I need to get it all started, and certainly a good bit of hobbying to work on.

It was quite funny how I came about it. I was searching high and low for a new project and army. I think that must have been the tell tale sign of the burn out on the deathwing, my reluctance to play it. But I kept going back on forth on idea's paint schemes and themes. Then, it hit me like a ton of bricks while talking on team speak with my star wars guild ... who were talking about the space marine demo we'd all just given a go.

It was a project I'd always wanted to do (ironically enough, the last time I went to start it, I quit the game for 10 years ...). Once I had that in my mind, it was settled. I got about playtesting the lists I thought might work for it - Blood Angels, Space Wolves or Grey Knights, but due to some of the models I wanted to make, Grey Knights worked best.

The list I settled on was some what predictable:

Coteaz (Count as Darth Vader)

5x Purifiers in a Rhino (Count as Royal Guard w/ Shadow Guard leading)
5x Purifiers in a Rhino (Count as Royal Guard w/ Shadow Guard leading)
5x Purifiers in a Rhino (Count as Royal Guard w/ Shadow Guard leading)

5x GKSS in a Psyback (Count as "Force" Storm Troopers - with a SG leading)
5x GKSS in a Psyback (Count as "Force" Storm Troopers - with a SG leading)
3x Acolytes in a Psyback w/ 2xMG (Count as Storm Troopers)
3x Acolytes in a Psyback w/ 2xMG (Count as Storm Troopers)
3x Acolytes in a Psyback w/ 2xMG (Count as Storm Troopers)
3x Acolytes in a Psyback w/ 2xMG (Count as Storm Troopers)

1x Dread with TL-Autos (Count as AT/ST)
1x Dread with TL-Autos (Count as AT/ST)

1x Dread with TL-Autos (Count as AT/ST)

I've done a lot of the planning, research and logistics for it, even bought the plasticard and tubing I need for a lot of the vehicle conversions. I've had some ideas about what I want to do - including a drop ship for one of the rhinos as "Vaders ride", and AT/AT (mini versions) for the other 2 rhinos.

I did say last night that I almost feel like I need 6 months away from playing and just use whatever free time I get to do this ... maybe that's the case

COMPETITIVE 40K FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?

It does mean that I won't be attending pretty much any of the next tourneys. Alex had asked me to go to that "ETC" style even at Maelstrom at the end of the month, I certainly won't be available for that. I also am going to withdraw from Tolworth, for a nifty loss of £30. Luckily you don't pay for Brighton in advanced so I can decide closer to the time, though ... I have been invited up North that weekend. So really come Brighton Warlords it will be the do or die moment for me I guess.

  3. On a serious note.
Bully, it took me just 5 weeks to get into a position where I felt like I wanted to play 40k again.
It really didn't take that long.
I will coach myself into just playing a game a week and analysing it as I always did in my head...on the blog.
This means I can really analyse Deployment, Early, Mid, Late game development etc.. as well as commenting on the opponents list etc.

I think this is how 40k will be for a while, I'll get to whatever tournaments I can - Brighton and Blog Wars 2 are definates this year..

I love 40k and I love the wonderful grim dark universe that GW have created. But fr me, my gaming expectations have matured and my tastes have changed slightly.

I read a post yesterday about the importance of not comparing 40k to skirmish games, as they are 'apples and oranges'...and they are. They fulfill 2 different needs/wants in 2 very different ways.
    For me, I need both.

    Don't sell the Wing mate.
You will genuinely want to play them again next week!
    That's a serious plea..
Unless of course you are broke. Which I doubt.

The Wall can only contain us for so long man, then it crumbles and we spill out into fresh and green pastures once again brother.

  5. The wall can happen to anyone in any hobby that is as time and finance intensive as wargaming. I've found over the years stepping away from one aspect of the hobby and then refocusing on something else really can help. About two years ago now I was running on empty on virtually all games I played, Hordes, Warmachine, Warhammer Fantasy, 40k... pretty much everything. I was finding the hobby tiring, and worst of all boring. So I decided to build my own 8' by 4' gaming table and did a damn fine job of it, so much so others asked me to help them build theirs. So that's what I did for a month or two, helped people build various gaming tables. My gaming was limited too the inaugral game on each table. Then I got the bug back when people started asking me if I'd run them through a game of Infinity. A break can do you the world of good but find something to keep you tied to the hobby, even if its posting here.
