IG Tourney List: Finalising my Choices

In this weeks news, I realise i need more flashlights

So here we are, the X-Legion 1750 point tournament is two weeks away, and i believe i have finalised my list. Prompted largely by Killswitch's article earlier this week (which you can read here, its good, i promise) i had a long think about what my previous army choices might struggle with.  I did a huge amount of mathhammering.  Mech i know i can handle, after all its all I've played against for god knows how long.  But i began really thinking about how many ork boys my army could kill per turn.  What about if they have cover?  What about crazy flying nid army, a ravening horde of bezerkers, i don't know, an army composed entirely of units of 20 deamonettes.  Seriously i thought about all sorts of mental scenarios.

The conclusion was that I really needed some way to really hurt large groups of FNP marines and multi wound T4 critters, and to do so early on.  I also wanted a way to reliably kill Terminators, since i have a feeling we'll be seeing some Deathwing lists.  The problem was, I didn't want to start drastically reducing my anti mech capability, particularly the autocannon count.

What i have come up with is below.  Basically I removed a single hydra in favour of several upgrades.  In exchange i gave the demolitions upgrade to my two squads of meltavets.  This gives them a serious alphastriking punch (especially combined with two squads of stormtroopers).  It also means that even if I leave them in their Chimeras they have a very meaningful counterattack capability that will scare light and heavy mech, heavy infantry, and hordes all the same.

I also went back to the inclusion of a single platoon.  I love my throwaway flamer unit (the PCS).  This unit is always overlooked as being 'just flamers', but it kills a lot of stuff in most games (8 out of 10 assault marines from a single shot in last nights game).  The more you stack flamer templates the more effective they get, and this way I don't waste BS4 guys on things that auto hit.  I also wanted the Infantry Squads because i was well and truly (re)schooled by Ven a few weeks back on how not to deploy against drop pods and other deep striking nastiness.  Bubble wrap is my friend, i just forgot about him because he's only BS3.  Besides, these guys can go in the Vets rides if they alpha strike from the vendettas.

Anyway, enough of my rambling, here's the list.

Company Command Squad - 4 meltaguns, Chimera

Stormtroopers - 5 men, 2 meltaguns, Chimera

Veteran Squad - 3 plasmaguns, autocannon, Chimera

This comes to exactly 1750 points.  12 Hulls, 70 infantry, 22 Autocannon shots (12 twin linked, 6 BS4), 14 meltaguns on 5 units.

The long and the short of it is, I have actually gained a few autocannon shots, regained my bubblewrap, and increased my alpha strike potential.  On the other hand I have lost one AV12 hull (though it was squadroned, so no lost threat vectors), and lost some range (and twin linking) on those autocannons.

I actually tried this list against a ridiculous triple-landraider list which i know is going to be at the tournament and i won the game despite it being a capture and control and having some of the most absurdly bad luck
I have ever had the misfortune to suffer.  In the end, the list played itself without the help of either the dice or myself (I wasnt on form, so I guess the dice were telling me to buck my ideas up), and it was effective.

Anyway, i'd love to hear any thoughts on the list.  I'm happy to make small changes, but i think its generally fixed now, if only because i need to get the damn painting done.  I still have 3 hydras, 1 Vendetta, 1 robot, 1 weapons team, and 10 stormtroopers to finish in 2 weeks.

  1. As a tournament list I'd say it looks good. Lacks a little flavour for my local club scene, but hey, it's a tournament list... you gotta bring your A-game :oP
